observations on life

Wait a minute. Is it 1968?

Summer 2016: Protests and demonstrations in the streets.  People being murdered and hurt and arrested by the police.  Police getting hurt in the process.  Americans at each others’ throats.  Chaos looming at the party conventions.  Death and suffering of the weak at the hands of the strong all over the world.  Military personnel with automatic weapons on patrol throughout Europe.

Summer 1968:  Protests and demonstrations in the streets.  People being murdered and hurt and arrested by the police.  Police getting hurt in the process.  Americans at each others’ throats.  Chaos at the Democratic convention, and racist fascism by the police and the city of Chicago.  Garbage clogs the streets of Paris.  The weak suffer and die at the hands of the strong all over the world.  Soviet tanks roll into Prague.

What am I forgetting?  I was 13 years old.  But some of those images are seared into my memory.  The tanks.  People shouting “Dubcek!”  The black Olympic athletes on the victory stand with raised fists. The Chicago Eight.  Sheer pandemonium at the convention.  Vietnam protestors and Vietnam supporters nearly rabid with hate.  Protestors at colleges shot down by the National Guard.   Arrested, manhandled, sent to prison.  Riots.  Fires.  Rubber bullets.  Fire hoses.

Somebody save us from ourselves.  We already did this.  I do NOT want to do it again.
