What Dreams May Come

What Dreams May Come (2008)

Now, still, when I wake, I sense you lying next to me.
A being, a consciousness,
You,
Beside me.
I open my eyes and realize, again, for the two thousandth time
That I am alone in the bed, and that you populate that space
Only when I sleep.

When life is real, and hard, and clear, you are nowhere. Nothing.
No trace is left of you
What you were has vanished, and these few things
I have of yours seem from a different life, as if
You were always only a dream from which I awoke one day,
And my life was something other than what I had believed it to be.
A long, continuous dream, no more real than the dreams
I have of you now, when I sleep,
And you sleep beside me.
